Roofing and Siding Working Together

Your home's siding does more than set first impressions. It's the primary moisture barrier between Ohio's freeze-thaw cycles and your wall sheathing, and when it fails, the damage works inward fast. SOS Home Ohio installs premium vinyl siding across the Columbus metro, and because we also handle roofing and gutters, we look at the whole exterior picture in a single visit. That matters when a storm peels back a panel or pops a corner piece, sometimes what looks like a siding problem started at the roofline. Call 614-913-3809 and we'll walk you through exactly what you're looking at before you commit to anything.

Vinyl siding cost varies more than most homeowners expect. Panel profile, wall prep condition, insulated versus standard, and linear footage all push the number in different directions. A single-story ranch with clean sheathing and a straightforward profile costs far less than a two-story with rotted OSB, complex corners, and foam-backed panels. We don't publish a range here because a number pulled from the internet is not what your house actually costs. Every job is different, contact SOS Home Ohio for an accurate estimate.

Panel Options

Profiles and Finishes We Actually Install

Not every profile suits every house, and we'll tell you which one fits yours rather than just what sells.

01

4-Inch Straight Profile

The classic, clean look that suits colonial and traditional home styles throughout the Columbus suburbs. Tight horizontal lines read as crisp from the street and hold paint-matched trim details well.

02

Dutch Lap Profile

A beveled shadow line gives Dutch lap its dimensional depth. It's the most popular choice in established neighborhoods where homes have architectural character worth complementing rather than covering.

03

8-Inch Wide Panels

Wider panels install faster and read as a more contemporary look. They work especially well on newer builds and ranch-style homes where a broader horizontal band fits the proportions.

04

Foam-Backed Insulated Siding

A rigid foam backer bonded to the panel adds an insulating layer to the wall assembly, reducing thermal bridging through the studs. Ohio winters make this upgrade worth the conversation on almost any job.

What the 50-Point Exterior Review Tells You

Weather-resistant barrier installation on exterior wall sheathing during residential construction.

We run this assessment before a single panel comes off, because what's under the siding shapes the entire project.

Our unbiased inspectors run a 50-point exterior review that covers far more than the visible panel surface. They're checking the weather-resistant barrier, sheathing condition, trim and corner post integrity, moisture intrusion at window rough openings, soffit and fascia, and the transition zones where your siding meets the roofline. Most homeowners don't get this information before a job starts. They should. A rotten band board found during installation costs a fraction of what the same board costs to address two years later when it's driven water into the wall cavity. The review informs and empowers you to make decisions based on your home's actual condition, not a sales pitch.

How It Works

From First Call to Final Walk-Through

  1. 01

    Exterior Assessment

We schedule a no-pressure visit, run the 50-point review, and document what's behind your current siding before we quote anything. You see the same findings we do.

  2. 02

    Material Selection

We walk you through profile options, color samples, and the insulated versus standard decision based on your home's wall assembly, not what's easiest to install.

  3. 03

    Installation and Cleanup

Old material comes off, sheathing and barrier issues get addressed, new panels go on. We tarp the landscaping before work starts and clear the site completely before we leave.

Signs Your Siding Needs Attention Now

  1. 01

    Warping or Buckling Panels

Heat expansion and improper nailing both cause this. Buckled panels can't seal at the overlap, letting water track behind the surface and into the sheathing.

  2. 02

    Fading Beyond Normal Weathering

Severe color fade often signals UV degradation of the vinyl itself. Faded panels are typically more brittle and more prone to cracking in cold weather.

  3. 03

    Fungus, Mold, or Persistent Staining

Surface mold on siding usually means moisture is sitting somewhere it shouldn't. If cleaning doesn't resolve it, the problem may be behind the panel, not on it.

  4. 04

Storm Damage at Corners and Seams

Wind gets under loose corners and peels panels off in sequence. After any significant storm, check the corners first. And if any trim or panel has blown loose, that's also the right moment for a full exterior inspection to check whether the roof took the same hit.

SOS did a great job with my roof. From the initial estimate, working with the insurance company, explaining the process. They completed the job professionally and made sure everything was to my satisfaction before I signed off. They helped turn a very complex process into an easy one.

Paul from SOS came out today and was great. He clearly showed me the problem areas and what they would need to do to fix them. There was no sales pressure to get a new roof like many places do. I will do another review once the repairs are done.

Paul came out to inspect the roof after those big wind & hail storms. He was able to identify the issues and proposed affordable, smart solutions. Highly recommend!

Very pleased with the level of detail provided in the roof inspection following wind and hail damage to my roof and chimney cap. The inspection was thorough and comprehensive, offering a clear picture of the condition and remaining life of the entire roof system—including gutters, downspouts, roof surface, and attic interior. Paul and his team did an excellent job helping me understand my situation and the next steps toward resolving the issues. They answered all of my questions with patience and expertise.

SOS Roofing is true to its name. I contacted the company for emergency help for a friend. The company owner, Paul, responded immediately, arrived on-site in two to three hours, and had the emergency handled a short time after that. Due to a roof leaking badly in a serious rain and windstorm, a speedy response and solution was definitely needed. SOS Roofing provided that solution, preventing serious interior damage to the home. I highly recommend this company and its owner.

Siding Questions Homeowners Ask Us

How long does vinyl siding typically last in Ohio's climate?
Quality vinyl siding installed over a proper weather-resistant barrier commonly lasts 30 to 40 years. Ohio's freeze-thaw cycles are the main stress factor: they work panel seams and corner joints over time. Foam-backed insulated panels hold up slightly better in extreme cold because the backer limits thermal movement in the vinyl itself. Proper installation nailing is critical, panels that are face-nailed too tight crack in winter rather than flex.
Do I need to replace the weather-resistant barrier when I re-side?
Not always, but it's the right time to inspect it. When the old siding comes off, you can see whether the existing house wrap is torn, missing at seams, or compromised around window and door rough openings. If it is, replacing it adds minimal labor cost at that stage. If you skip it and seal new siding over a compromised barrier, you won't see the moisture damage until it's in the wall framing. We check this on every job during the 50-point exterior review.
Can siding be installed over existing siding, or does the old material have to come off?
It's possible to install over existing siding in some cases, but we don't recommend it as a general practice. Installing over old material hides whatever condition the sheathing and barrier are in, adds depth that can affect window and door trim alignment, and sometimes voids the manufacturer warranty on the new panels. The right call depends on what the wall assembly looks like under the existing surface, and we won't know until we get eyes on it.
What profile is right for an older two-story home?
Homes with traditional architecture typically read best with Dutch lap or 4-inch straight profiles because the narrower horizontal bands match the scale of multi-story elevations. Wide 8-inch panels can look out of proportion on a tall facade with lots of window breaks. That said, the right answer depends on your specific trim details, window size, and what you're going for aesthetically. We'd rather walk you through it with samples in hand than give you a definitive answer before we've seen the house.
Does new siding affect my homeowner's insurance or home value?
New siding can reduce insurance premiums in some cases, particularly if you're replacing older material that's rated for less wind resistance. It also contributes to appraised value, especially when paired with a roof replacement on a home that's showing its age. Neither outcome is guaranteed, but the combination of updated roofing and siding is one of the stronger exterior investments for Columbus-area homes heading toward resale. Every job is different, contact SOS Home Ohio for an accurate estimate.
